SteelPan Legacy
“Trinidad & Tobago’s National Instrument”

Introducing Caribbean culture, the global impact OF Carnival, and increased artform awareness. Since "1783 French planters developed their Carnival in Trinidad, which was noted to be a season of gay and elegant festivities extending from Christmas to Ash
Wednesday.”
Steelpans originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the late 1930 & 39's. And in 1939 the first all-steel band, Alexander & 39's Ragtime Band, emerged, and by 1940 it had become the preferred carnival accompaniment for underprivileged youth. The 55-gallon oil drum was used to make steelpans from around 1947.
